The Aprilia Scarabeo 500 is a full size touring bike in step through style (scooter). At 500 pounds it has the mass to provide a smooth ride on any road. Fully automatic, go downhill and back off the throttle and the bike slows down like you've downshifted. Lockable, removable sidecases have handles so they function like suitcases if so desired and provide a lot of extra storage in addition to the two helmet sized top case. There is a power outlet behind the front panel for cell phones, ipods or whatever and a storage compartment for gloves or glasses. Dashboard has a multifunction computer with dual trip meter, thermometer, mileage calculator, lap timer. Half windscreen provides protection from those unexpected rain storms. Carrying a passenger is hardly noticeable. No loss of power or handling. Mileage is about 55-60mpg. I've taken this bike up to 100 mph on a deserted country road. I'll do anything once but will never do that again.
Why am I selling it? I'm 56 and want to elliminate one dangerous sport. I also downhill ski and am a cyclist.
What have I changed? There is a second brake light on the top rear of the top case which is not wired for U.S. sales. I had it connected for additional visibility when braking. I also had the highbeam rewired so the main and high stay on at the same time when the high beams are turned on. The high beam by itself did not illuminate the sides of the road well. The odometer shows 4500 miles but the entire computer had to be replaced at 4000 miles resulting in a "0" reading at 4000. Actual miles 8500.
Damage? The only damage is a small scrape on the right side case and cowling edge. A slow motion spill due to slippery leaves in the fall. No structural damage. A replacement side case can be ordered from Wheelworks, the Eugene Aprilia dealer if the scrape bothers you that much.
Extras: Two skid suits, trickle charger for battery, security wheel lock, seat cover. helmet.
This is a wonderful bike. Piaggio bought Aprilia and the newer Scarabeos I don't think are as stylish as this one is. I hope to sell this bike to someone that will appreciate it and give it the TLC that it needs. any questions? call me 541-954-4682
